Archaeology’s Early Origins

Queensland Museum South Bank announces a new series of free lunchtime lectures for 2009
A free series of thought-provoking lunchtime talks on Queensland culture and history will take place at Queensland Museum South Bank in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Queensland Connections 2009, beginning 4 February, will explore a colourful range of topics from the defence preparations of North Queensland during World War II, through to life on a Queensland gold field and the origins of the famous macadamia nut industry.

Director of Queensland Museum South Bank Ms Sally Lewis said the popular 45-minute talks provided a wonderful opportunity for visitors to engage with expert speakers and discover more about our state’s unique culture and heritage.

“Archaeologists, historians, architects – all with a passion for Queensland culture and heritage – will deliver a varied perspective on an assortment of themes,” Ms Lewis said.

EPA Cultural Heritage Director Ms Fiona Gardiner said she was confident Queensland would want to connect with the history of their State in this, the 150^th year of statehood.

“There’s never been a more apt time to learn about our State than now,” Ms Gardiner said.

The first talk on 4 February, "Archaeology’s Early Origins", will be presented by Queensland Museum Curator of Archaeology Michael Westaway and will reveal the significance of the Museum’s Skertchly Collection.

The Skertchly Collection consists of Palaeolithic artefacts including Aboriginal stone artefacts dating back to the Ice Age.

Sydney Skertchly, a Queensland-based geologist, was the first to propose that human origins were far older than previously thought. His work was greatly influenced by Charles Darwin.

The talks are held on the first Wednesday of each month from February to November 2009 in the Queensland Museum South Bank Theatre from 12:30pm to 1.15pm.

Queensland Museum South Bank is located on the corner of Grey and Melbourne Streets, South Bank. The Museum is open daily from 9.30am to 5:00pm (closed Christmas Day and Good Friday, open Anzac Day from 1.30pm).
