12 Degrees of Latitude

Major exhibition from Queensland's regional gallery and university collections at QUT Art Museum

Celebrating Queensland’s 150th year, Twelve Degrees of Latitude, opening at QUT Art Museum on 15 October, is a tribute to the outstanding contribution of artworks from Queensland’s galleries and collecting institutions.

Exploring Queensland’s cultural identity and stories, Twelve Degrees of Latitude features significant major Australian, Indigenous, Pacific and European artwork dating from the 17th to the 21st century.

The exhibition includes a range of visually spectacular small and large scale wall works, three-dimensional, experimental and freestanding works, including works by leading Queensland artists, such as Rick Amor, Vernon Ah Kee, Richard Bell, Gordon Bennett, Ray Crooke, Ian Fairweather, Fiona Foley, Rosalie Gascoigne, Rosemary Laing, Tracey Moffatt, Margaret Olley, Patricia Piccinini, Jeffrey Smart and Anne Zahalka.

The exhibition provides an unprecedented opportunity for metropolitan, regional and remote audiences to view and engage with significant artworks held in our State’s regional collections.

Twelve Degrees of Latitude was officially launched as part of a Public Gallery Summit in Townsville. After the exhibition’s display at QUT Art Museum, Twelve Degrees of Latitude commences a regional tour to fifteen Queensland venues from 2010 until late 2011.

Museum and Gallery Service Queensland Executive Director, Rebekah Butler notes that the exhibition provides innovative and diverse opportunities for Queensland regional galleries and audiences.

“Through this exhibition Queensland audiences can engage with an incredible range of unique and significant artworks and celebrate the strength of our State’s regional gallery and university art collections,” Butler said.

The exhibition title Twelve Degrees of Latitude is a geographical reference to the approximate distance in degrees of South latitude from the northernmost public gallery in Queensland to the southernmost.

The exhibition is accompanied by a public program from Bettina MacAulay, the leading curator of the exhibition. A substantial full-colour catalogue and an education kit are available upon request.
